CAIRO – 27 April 2023:  The German Embassy in Cairo announced the success of an evacuation mission of 700 people from 40 different nationalities from Sudan, in cooperation with the Egyptian authorities.

“On eight flights, Germany has succeeded in bringing about 700 people from more than 40 countries to safety, under the most difficult conditions,” the embassy said in a post on Facebook on Thursday.

“This mission has been a successful teamwork between the German Armed Forces, the Federal Police and the German Foreign Office. In the past days, our colleagues have intensified their efforts to evacuate as many people as possible from the dangerous situation in Sudan to safety,” the statement added.

The embassy thanked the Egyptian partners, who made the flight to Sudan possible.

Meanwhile, Ambassador of Lebanon to Egypt and its Permanent Representative to the League of Arab States, Ali al-Halabi, expressed his deep gratitude to the Egyptian authorities for the support and facilitation of the entry of five Lebanese citizens into Egyptian territory.

"The five citizens (a woman with her three children and a man) entered across the border with Sudan and will go back to Lebanon," the ambassador said in a statement on Thursday, noting that the Lebanese nationals are now safe.

On the same day, buses carrying the Palestinian citizens from Sudan arrived in Egypt on Thursday morning through the Arqin border crossing, announced the Palestinian Embassy in a statement.

A total of 194 citizens will then head to the Gaza Strip through Rafah border crossing accompanied by the embassy representative, and 29 citizens will move to the Cairo International Airport to travel to their next destinations, the statement added.

The Palestinian Embassy in Cairo made intensive contacts with the concerned Egyptian agencies to transfer its citizens from Khartoum to the Gaza Strip. The embassy thanked the Egyptian government and its concerned agencies for their keenness to secure “the exit of the Palestinian returnees and to overcome all obstacles until their safe return to their families and relatives.”

Egypt has stepped up its evacuation efforts in Sudan as it managed to evacuate more than 16,000 people including Egyptians and other nationals, according to a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry on Thursday.

Since the clashes started between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) last week, Egypt has been calling for consolidating a ceasefire in Sudan and ending hostilities

Egypt, which has around 10,000 citizens, including students, in Sudan, has so far repatriated 1,539 citizens, according to figures released by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.
