CAIRO – 25 April 2023: The death of an Egyptian embassy staff in Sudan on Monday amid the ongoing deadly clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has brought international condemnation.

The European Union, Canada, and Jordan have expressed deep sorrow regarding the killing of Mohamad El-Gharawi, the assistant administrative attaché at the Egyptian embassy in Khartoum.

“EU Ambassador [Christian] Berger expresses his deep sadness regarding the news of the killing of one Egypt Embassy staff in Khartoum while on duty, and extends his heartfelt condolences to the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and family of the victim,” the EU delegation to Egypt wrote on Twitter.

Canadian Ambassador to Cairo Louis Dumas also extended the deepest condolences over the death of the Egyptian embassy staff member.

“Our heart goes out to the family and friends of Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ team member who was killed in Sudan,” Dumas said in a tweet cited by the Canadian Embassy in Cairo.

“Our deepest condolences to Embassy of Egypt in Sudan and our friends,” Dumas added.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry extended condolences to Egypt for the death of Gharawy.

The ministry renewed its call on the warring parties in Sudan to promptly halt all military operations and exercise self-restraint to avoid more escalation and serve the highest interests of the country and its people, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

Jordan's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday expressed condolences to Egypt over the death of the embassy staffer.

In a statement, the ministry reiterated its call for all parties in Sudan to exercise restraint, put an immediate end to the fighting, resume dialogue, and abide by the political framework agreement.

This should bring about a new phase that meets the aspirations of the Sudanese people and contributes to bolstering security, political and economic stability in the African country, the Jordanian ministry added.

Gharawy was killed yesterday on his way from his residence to the embassy in Khartoum with the country working to evacuate its citizens from Sudan amid the ongoing clashes that killed over 400 people.

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it considers its deceased a martyr and a symbol of sacrifice for the sake of the homeland and the protection of its higher interests.

The Egyptian mission in Sudan will continue to shoulder its responsibility with regard to evacuating its citizens and ensuring their safe return to the homeland, the Egyptian ministry added.
