AL Chief, Cypriot President discuss issues of Arab issues, Russian-Ukraine war repercussions

CAIRO – 6 April 2023: Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, received President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides, who is currently visiting Cairo.

 

Aboul Gheit welcomed the Cypriot President to the headquarters of the Arab League, praising to the deep-rooted historical relationship between Cyprus and the Arab world and the extended political, economic and popular relations that bind the two sides, said AL Spokesperson Jamal Rushdi in a statement.

 

The AL Chief also stressed the importance of cooperation and coordination mechanisms in the regional and international arenas.

 

Cyprus is an important European partner of the Arab League and plays a traditional role in support of peace, security and stability in the region, Rushdi said, adding that Cyprus is a party that has constant positions on the Palestinian issue and support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

 

The meeting witnessed an exchange of views on a number of important regional and international issues such as the recent developments in Jerusalem and the situations in Syria and Libya, as well as the repercussions of the war in Ukraine on the Arab and European regions and the overall situation in the Middle East region, Rushdi added.

 

For his part, Cypriot President expressed his appreciation for the important role played by the Arab League at the regional level and his country's keenness to strengthen the bonds of relations and ties with the Arab world.

 

 He affirmed the convergence of visions on the importance of Arab-European relations, as well as the need to strengthen them.

 

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi received on Wednesday Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides, at Al ttihadiya Palace where the ceremonial welcome was held, the two national anthems were played, and the guard of honor was reviewed.

 

According to Spokesperson for the Presidency, Ahmed Fahmy, the two presidents held one-on-one meeting followed by expanded talks between the delegations of the two countries.

 

Both Presidents commended the ongoing development of the Egyptian-Cypriot relations and the steady progress of the historical ties between the two friendly countries that has been witnessed in recent years at all levels, particularly with regards to natural gas and electrical connectivity.
