CAIRO – 2 April 2023: The Ministry of Health and Population announced Sunday carrying out 1.7 million surgeries within the presidential initiative launched in July 2018 to eliminate waiting lists.

The ministry had announced in June 2022 that the number of expedite surgeries carried out for patients on waiting lists had amounted to 1.3 million. In a related context, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi directed in March Tahya Misr Fund (Long Live Egypt Fund) to allocate LE 1 billion to the initiative.

The surgeries included in the initiative are kidney transplant, liver transplant, cochlear transplant, tumor removal, cardiac catheters, brain catheters, and others pertaining to heart, bones, eyes, brain and nerves.

In a related context, Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesman for the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population, confirmed in August that the 100 Million Healthy lives initiative had achieved great success, as it aimed to completely eliminate the C virus.

Abdel Ghaffar noted that the state examined about 70 million citizens to detect hepatitis C as part of the initiative, where: “More than 2.2 million people infected with hepatitis C virus were detected," and granted treatment.
