CAIRO – 17 March 2023: Egypt is a pioneer in dealing with the refugee file, said Mai Mahmoud, Mai Mahmoud, UNHCR focal point assistant protection officer, on the sidelines of a workshop organized by UNHCR asylum and protection issues.

She added that the Egyptian state, since the beginning of the UNHCR's work in Egypt in 1954, has rejected the status of building camps of refugees, Youm7 reported.

Senior Communications Associate at the UN Refugee Agency Radwa Sharaf confirmed that, in cooperation with the Egyptian government, many services are provided, including health and educational services.

She continued that 85% of refugee children registered with the UNHCR have the right to attend schools, and educational services are provided to them similar to Egyptians, in addition to healthcare campaigns.

Egypt hosts a total of 291,578 refugees registered with the UNHCR in Egypt, of whom 7,680 have been registered since the beginning of the year, including 4,088 refugees in February only, of whom 35% are Syrians.
