CAIRO – 13 March 2023: The digging of the new shipping lane in the Suez Canal in one year helped facilitate the vessel movements and saved a lot of money, said the Suez Canal Authority Chief Admiral Osama Rabie,

“The [digging of] new Suez Canal was a correct vision, and the crossing of this large number of ships would not have taken place in the old canal only […] the new Suez Canal opened new horizons,” he said in comments to AlHayat Al Youm talk show on Al Hayat T.V. on Monday.

He added that the number of ships crossing through the canal increased thanks to the new lane.

The Suez Canal has recorded its highest daily transit rate as 107 ships are set to cross the international trade route on Monday with net tonnage of 6.3 million tons, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority Osama Rabie has said in a statement.

A total of 56 ships has crossed the canal from the north with a net tonnage of 3.4 million tons and 51 ships have passed through the canal’s new navigational course from the south with a net tonnage of 2.9 million tons, the statement said.

The giant container ship EVER GIFTED, classified as one of the largest of its kind in the world, has also crossed the canal today from the north heading to Malaysia from Greece with a total tonnage of 223,000 tons, the SCA statement said.
