CAIRO - 8 March 2023: Every year, women celebrate International Women's Day. Various institutions celebrate this day, but not many know where the idea of celebrating International Women's Day came from.

This is what we will learn about in this report:

Why do we celebrate International Women's Day?

The world first celebrated International Women's Day on February 28, 1909, specifically in New York City. Two years later, German socialist Louise Zitz proposed that the holiday become a day celebrated every year in order to celebrate various women's issues, including suffrage, which is the right to vote in political elections, in order to promote Equal rights for women.

Women celebrated the first International Women's Days in a different way than they celebrate at the present time, as many women were keen to organize hundreds of demonstrations in Europe, to demand that they be granted the right to vote and hold public office.

Among the issues that women fought for was discrimination on the basis of sex at work, which they demanded to be abolished every International Women's Day, and in 1917.

International Women's Day demonstrations in St. Petersburg, Russia helped start the February Revolution, when women marched through the city demanding an end to World War I.

In 1977, International Women's Day was celebrated mainly in socialist countries, after the decision of the United Nations General Assembly to declare March 8 as International Women's Day, hence the holiday gained popularity all over the world.

Countries now celebrate the day annually by reviewing the achievements of women in different fields, searching for women's issues to find solutions to them.
