CAIRO – 22 February 2023: Egypt has witnessed a slight and gradual rise in coronavirus cases since mid-January, Egypt’s Minister of Health Khaled Abdel Ghaffar said on Wednesday.

Abdel Ghaffar made the remarks during the weekly cabinet meeting today chaired by Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli.

Abdel Ghaffar, however, affirmed the necessity to adhere to the coronavirus preventive measures.

Current coronavirus cases do not need to go to hospitals, Abdel Ghaffar said, highlighting the importance of committing to protective measures.

He noted that the number of coronavirus deaths receded for the seventh week in 2023 compared to the previous week.

Also, a total of more than 40.8 million people has been vaccinated against the coronavirus in Egypt, Abdel Ghaffar added.

Egypt has stopped to issue daily coronavirus briefings since the pandemic situation in the country has been stable and most of the hospital beds have been vacant.

Egypt has noted repeatedly that the Omicron variant of coronavirus is the dominant strain in the country, calling for citizens to continue adhering to the preventive measures.
