CAIRO - 2 February 2023: The Egyptan Ministry of Health and Population revealed the epidemiological situation of the Corona virus, indicating that the new mutant xBB1.5 is a strain branching from the Omicron mutant, which grows and transmits rapidly compared to the rest of the strains.

The ministry explained that the symptoms of the new strain are: cold, high temperature, coughing and bone fracture, adding that the therapeutic protocol is able to confront the infection.

Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, spokesman for the Ministry of Health and Population, said the preventive measures must be taken to prevent the new variant of the Corona virus, which includes: making sure to wear a mask in crowds and places that are not well ventilated, and in case of infection of a person with the disease.

And he continued: The person who is infected with COVID-19 must wear a mask to prevent the transmission of the infection, and the infected person must adhere to a 10-day isolation period from the date of onset of symptoms, and for people who have been confirmed to have the disease and have not shown symptoms, they must adhere to a 5-day isolation period, and the patient can be discharged from isolation early if the test result is negative.

He added that vaccines are still the first line of defense to prevent infection relatively, as well as the absence of new mutants of the virus, and care must be taken to take the vaccine and its booster doses.

Dr. Hossam Hosni, head of the scientific committee to combat Corona at the Ministry of Health and Population, said: “If the opportunity arises for any virus, it multiplies and makes copies of itself, so its genetic makeup changes sometimes, which is considered a natural matter, and this is known as a genetic mutation, and the more it becomes widespread, the more it multiplies and does not lead to these changes.”

Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar added: "The new mutant is a sub-strain of the Omicron mutant strain, and it can grow and transmit rapidly compared to other strains."

Dr. Hossam Hosni, head of the scientific committee to combat Corona, confirmed that the booster dose of the Corona vaccine reduces the chances of infection with Covid 19, indicating that the booster dose is available without prior reservation.

The Ministry of Health appeals to citizens to register on the ministry’s website, https://egcovac.mohp.gov.eg/#/registration, to receive coronavirus vaccines, which contribute to protecting all family members from severe infections with the Corona virus and its mutants, stressing that the Egyptian state spares no effort. In providing vaccines to citizens free of charge, within the framework of the Ministry's concern for the public health of citizens and the state's gains in dealing with the pandemic.
