Egyptian authorities lift asset freeze on former ambassador Massoum Marzouk

CAIRO – 23 December 2022: Egypt’s investigative authorities sent a letter to the Central Bank of Egypt (TCBE) to lift asset freeze on former Ambassador Massoum Marzouk, Cairo24 reported on Thursday.

The Cairo Criminal Court had ordered freezing the funds and assets of Marzouk, who is accused in the case number 1305 of 2018 of charges including assisting a terrorist group.

According to renowned Lawyer Khaled Ali, Marzouk and others in the case face charges of assisting a terrorist group to reach their goals, receiving funds for a terror purpose, and being part of an outlawed agreement that seeks to commit a terrorist crime.

Marzouk and others in the case were released in 2019 pending investigation.

Who is Massoum Marzouk?

Marzouk is an Egyptian diplomat, politician, and writer. He served as Egypt's ambassador to Uganda, Finland and Estonia.

Marzouk participated in the War of Attrition between Israel and Egypt, Joran, Palestine, and other allies between 1967 and 1970.

He also participated in the October 1973 War, and was awarded the Medal of Courage of the First Class.

He served as Assistant to the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and was a diplomat in Ecuador, New York, and Jordan.
