CAIRO - 12 December 2022: Egypt has embarked on multiple transportation projects, which has expanded its transport networks to serve the public.

Since the new means of transportation run on electricity, Egypt Today thought to provide brief information, in the below lines, on each project to understand the different between the two prominent projects: the light electric train (LRT) and the electric express train.

Light Rail Transit (LRT)

It is very similar to the metro, but it differs in the distance between stations, which ranges from approximately 3.5 km to 6.5 km between each station, as it connects new cities to each other.

The LRT operates in Egypt from Adly Mansour station, passing through the new urban cities, and the path ends in the New Administrative Capital. It has a branch from Badr City that reaches the Tenth of Ramadan City, with a total length of 105 km and 19 stations.

The first phase has a total of 11 stations, in addition to one station from the second phase, opened on July 3, 2022, to join the light electric train to the clean transport system by electric trains in Egypt, which consists of “tram, subway, monorail, light electric train (LRT), and fast electric train.”

The design speed is 120 km/h, the financial cost is $22 million per kilometer, and the hourly capacity ranges from 20-40 thousand passengers/hour.

The most important difference between the light train and the express train is the distance between the stations in addition to the speeds; 1 km to 1.5 km.

The light rail serves the new cities on the Cairo-Ismailia desert road, such as: El-Obour, El-Shorouk, El-Mustaqbal, and Badr until the tenth of Ramadan in the north, and the Administrative Capital in the south, to facilitate citizens to move from Cairo to those cities and vice versa.

Express electric train

The electric express train is being implemented to connect all the governorates of Egypt, to achieve the service of transporting passengers and goods. It consists of three lines with a length of about 2000 km and 60 stations as follows:

The first line extends from Ain Sukhna - Hadayek October - Alexandria, El Alamein and Marsa Matrouh, with a length of about 660 km and 22 stations.

The second extends from the October station - Fayoum / Beni Suef - Abu Simbel city, with a length of 1400 km west of the western desert road, and 35 stations. 225 km, 3 stations.

This train has large distances between stations, with an average of 30 to 50 km between each two stations.

Three models of the trains will operate on the first line, including:

The express train, with a speed of 250 km / h and stops in the capitals of the governorates only, which makes it shorten the journey time from Cairo to Aswan for almost half the time.

The second model is the regional train, with a speed of 160 km/h, and it will stop at city stations.

The third model is the freight train, with a speed of 120 km/h, and connects ports and industrial areas.

The financial cost of the express train is $25 million per kilometer, and the capacity is 15,000 passengers per hour in each direction, and the capacity is 250,000 passengers/day. The first line of the train is scheduled to operate in 2024.
