CAIRO – 17 November 2022: Manakh neighborhood in Port Said, a Suez Canal governorate, has become Egypt's first solar-powered neighborhood, as stated by the head of the neighborhood's municipal authority, Mansour Bakry.

"Manakh" came into existence in 1800, and has been mostly inhabited by fishermen. It spans over 3,312 square kilometers, and has almost 100,000 dwellers.

Official at the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy told Youm7 Sunday that the percentage of renewables in the energy mix rose by 14.4 percent in 2022 with an increase of 4,627 gigawatts.

The amount of wind energy produced went up by 10.8 percent recording 1,845 gigawatts. The same applied to solar energy as it grew by 0.2 percent hitting 1,348 gigawatts. The share of renewable energy also includes seven gigawatts generated through biofuel.

Renewables reduced carbon emissions by 3,500 tons, and saved fuel by 1,430 tons, the official noted, highlighting that Egypt had signed 16 MoUs in the fields of green hydrogen and green ammonia.

In 2021, the share of renewables in the maximum load reached 31 percent of the total generated energy.
