Alaa Abd El-Fattah sends letter to family, says he broke hunger strike

CAIRO – 15 November 2022: Alaa Abd El Fattah said Tuesday that he has broken his hunger strike, asking his mother [in a short letter published by his sister Sanaa] to bring a cake to the prison during her next visit scheduled for Thursday because he wants to celebrate his birthday.

“I want to celebrate my birthday with you on Thursday, I haven’t celebrated for a long time, and want to celebrate with my cellmates, so bring a cake, normal provisions, I have broken my strike, I’ll explain everything on Thursday” Alaa Abd El-Fattah stated in his short letter dated on 14th of November.

On Thursday, Egypt’s Public Prosecution said in statement, that Alaa Abdel Fattah was following a “restricted daily calories” diet –which is a partial hunger strike-, and that he is consuming enough calories to maintain his health, and that all of his vital signs’ examinations have resulted within the normal limits.

The prosecution investigation regarding Alaa Abdel Fattah health have concluded that ‘he was in good condition’, and does not require transferring to any medical center

 

Abdel Fattah, according to the prosecution was authorized to take vitamins and dose not to suffer from any organic diseases.

 

The Public Prosecution inspected Abdel Fattah cell, which he shares with 3 other inmates. The report indicated that he acquires 2 beds, one of which was filled with a large number of books and magazines in different languages, along a number of medical drugs, vitamins and supplements

It was noted that Alaa Abdel Fattah relatives regularly visits him in regular and exceptional visits on a regular basis, according to his visitation records. His last visit was on 7th November.

Egypt's Public Prosecution said that a specialized medical committee has examined Abdel Fattah and conducted all medical tests and decided that he is receiving enough calories to maintain good health and that his hunger strike “is questionable”.

On December 20, 2021, an emergency court of the Egyptian State Supreme Security sentenced Alaa Abd El Fattah to five years in prison for charges of “publishing false news and disinformation, with the intent of disturbing public peace and stability.”

Alaa Abd El Fattah was arrested in September 2019 during rare demonstrations that were called by fugitive contractor Mohamed Ali.
