CAIRO - 20 October 2022:  Egypt's Al-Azhar, a top Islamic Sunni institution, welcomed Australia's reversal of recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

“Jerusalem was, is, and will remain - God willing - the eternal capital of the Palestinian state,” Al Azhar said in a statement on Thursday.

The Islamic Institution affirms its firm stance towards the Palestinian cause, and its categorical rejection of any measures violate rights of this oppressed people to restore their territories and establish their independent state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.

The center-left Labor Party government Cabinet agreed to again recognize Tel Aviv as the capital and reaffirmed that Jerusalem's status must be resolved in peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, the Edge reported quoting Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong as saying.

Australia remained committed to a two-party solution to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, and "we will not support an approach that undermines this prospect," Wong said.
