CAIRO – 18 October 2022: The Naval Forces have raised the Egyptian flag on the new MEKO A-200 frigate, named Al-Aziz, produced by Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems company (TKMS) in the German SBN Arsenal.

Commander of the Naval Forces Ashraf Atwa raised the flag on the frigate, which is one of four MEKO A-200 frigates contracted between Egypt and Germany, Spokesman of the Egyptian Armed Forces said in a statement on Tuesday.

The multi-mission frigate is able of sailing for a distance of 6,800 nautical miles at a maximum speed of 28 knots, the spokesman said.

He added that the total length of the frigate is 121.6 meters with a displacement tonnage of up to 3,931 tons.

MEKO A-200 enjoys many technical characteristics and modern armament systems that enables it to carry out various combat missions at sea in times of peace and war, the spokesman affirmed.

The frigate is also capable of combating various maritime threats at surface, air, and under the sea, preventing smuggling operations and illegal immigration, and securing the various natural resources of the state at sea, the spokesman said.

“This makes (the frigate) a huge technological addition for the naval forces and an endorsement of its capabilities to protect the Egyptian national security,” the spokesman noted.

The frigate is also capable of securing allied shipping lines, securing the merchant ships passing through them, and implementing humanitarian support operations in the afflicted areas, he added.

The specialized technical crews working on the new frigate were trained and rehabilitated in record time according to a simultaneous program implemented in two phases in Egypt and Germany, the spokesman added.
