CAIRO - 11 October 2022: FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for the Near East and North Africa AbdulHakim Elwaer lauded Egypt's remarkable efforts in the issue of climate change, saying this issue becomes the most important topic in the world.

In exclusive statements to Al Akhbariya news agency on Tuesday, Elwaer said Egypt exerts tangible efforts, in cooperation with relevant parties from governments, international institutions, civil society and the private sector, to take climate action and shift from climate pledges to actual implementation, along with mobilizing international efforts to promote green transformation in Africa and developing countries.

Climate changes have led to drought in some areas, like that happened in East Africa and Morocco, flash floods in Pakistan and wildfires in Lebanon and Algeria, he added.

The Egyptian authorities are working around the clock to host, on behalf of the African continent, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 2022 (COP 27) in Sharm El-Sheikh on November 6-18, 2022.

This year's international gathering aims to establish legally binding commitments for developed countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Egypt focuses on urgent and priority issues in the African continent, in particular, and in developing countries in general, such as adaptation and climate finance.

“Egypt looks forward to building on the outputs of Glasgow to set a global goal for adaptation according to the 'from Glasgow - Sharm El Sheikh' work program, especially after the completion of the Paris Rulebook,” said the Ministry of Environment in a statement.
