CAIRO – 29 September 2022: Exams of the Thanaweya Amma (Egypt’s high school – grade 12) will be corrected electronically with no human interference, Minister of Education Reda Hegazy said on Thursday.
The new school year will start on Saturday, 1 October, Hegazy said in a press conference to explain the details of the ministry’s plans for the new school year 2022/2023.
This year, the Thanaweya Amma exams will be held using the bubble sheet system, which was also used last year.
Over the past years, Egypt has amended its decades-old Thanaweya Amma system in various fields under the term of former Education Minister Tarek Shawki with the aim of establishing a system that is based on understanding the curriculums rather that memorizing for exams.
Since the implementation of the new system in the academic year 2020/2021, the passing rate of students has significantly dropped, after families have pressured their children for decades to chase the full marks in all exams.
In the past academic year of 2021/2022, the overall pass rate for students in the Thanaweya Amma system hit 75 percent up from 74 percent in the previous year.
This represents a significant drop for the passing rate of Thanaweya Ammas students, which recorded 81.5 percent in the year 2020/2021.
As a result, the minimum grades for admission into Egyptian universities have significantly dropped for the first time in decades.
