60 countries attend GeoMEast 2017 in Sharm El-Sheikh

CAIRO – 15 July 2017: Under the Auspices of Prime Minister Sherif Ismail, the first Middle East international sustainable geotechnology infrastructure conference, GeoMEast 2017 “Sustainable Civil Infrastructures: Innovative Infrastructure Geotechnology", launched on Saturday in Sharm el-Sheikh. The 5-day conference attracts more than 200 participants from 60 countries, including business professionals.

GeoMEast is sponsored by the Ministriy of Housing, Utilities and Urban Development; the Ministry of Transport; and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is managed by the Egyptian Soil-Structure Interaction Group (SSIGE), in partnership with the Housing and Research Center (HBRC) of the Ministry of Housing, and supported by a number of leading international professional organizations.

Following the first conference in Sharm el-Sheikh, the SSIGE will organize the conference annually in one of the Middle Eastern countries.

According to the conference’s official website, the conference aims to showcase the recent developments and advancements in design, construction and safety inspections of transportation infrastructures. It also offers a forum to discuss and debate future directions for the 21st century.

The head of SSIGE, Khaled El-Zahaby, said in his opening speech that the conference is the first of its kind to expand and exchange experiences on geotechnical structure and engineering, including scientific discussions in the field of construction and contracting, and how to increase the rates of sustainable development in Egypt. El-Zahaby attributed the selection of the city of Sharm el-Sheikh to promoting Egyptian tourism, especially that the conference hosts a large number of experts from all over the world who will have the opportunity to explore the “city of peace”.

The five-day conference includes 30 sessions on a broad array of topics for professionals involved in bridges, pavement, geomechanics, geo-environmental, geotechnical, geosciences, geophysics, tunnels, water structures, railways and emerging techniques for safety inspections. You will have the opportunity to meet colleagues from all over the world for technical, scientific and commercial discussions.

The conference will present awards, such as the “best paper awards”, “best presenter awards”, “best student presenter awards” and “industrial project awards”, according to the conference’s official website.
