Egypt’s Public Prosecution says imprisoned activist Alaa Abdel Fattah was not subjected to any kind of physical torture

CAIRO – 28 July 2022: Egypt’s Public Prosecution said, Thursday that the investigations it conducted regarding the imprisoned activist Alaa Abdel Fattah confirmed that he was not subjected to any kind of physical torture, and that his body doesn’t has any marks of any kind that indicates otherwise.

In a statement the prosecution issued to clarify the results of its investigations into the complaints submitted by Alaa’s lawyer and a number of his relatives, which included being tortured during his stay at the Tora Correction and Rehabilitation Center, as well as preventing his family from visiting him, the statement said that one of the chief prosecutors in the Human Rights Department of the Public Prosecutor’s Office visited Alaa and reviewed his file.

It was stated that the imprisoned activist received eight visits from his mother, two sisters and some of his relatives, and that they brought him food on some of those visits.

The last visit of Alaa’s mother was on the 16th of July, according to the statement.

Asking the director of the medical center at the Reform Center regarding the activist health, he testified that the Alaa was in good health, and that the specialist doctor regularly visits him and the rest of the prisoners to follow up on their health conditions, and that the prisoner [Alaa] had never previously suffered from any health problem or complaint of any symptoms.

And by asking the deputy director of the Correction and Rehabilitation Center, he said that the prisoner regular receives his meals, visits, and do his exercising.

The Chief Prosecutor in the Human Rights Department inspected Alaa’s room, and found that it was spacious and not overcrowded with prisoners, as it contained only three other prisoners along with Alaa. He also found a large numbers of books and magazines in different languages in possession of the activist.

Asking Alaa himself, he said that he is being treated with dignity by the officers and personnel of the Correction and Rehabilitation Center.

Alaa then requested to communicate with a member of the British Consulate [ as a British citizen], However he did not provide evidence that he holds that nationality.

Earlier in May, a security source told Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper that Egyptian blogger and activist Alaa Abd El Fattah is not on a hunger strike and receives all his meals at the Correction and Rehabilitation Center.

The source added that the inmate gets food from the center's canteen.

The Independent reported on Sunday that Alaa entered his six week of hunger strike inside Torah prison, southern Cairo.

On December 20, 2021, an emergency court of the Egyptian State Supreme Security sentenced Alaa Abd El Fattah to five years in prison for charges of “publishing false news and disinformation, with the intent of disturbing public peace and stability.”

Alaa Abd El Fattah was arrested in September 2019 during rare demonstrations that were called by fugitive contractor Mohamed Ali.
