CAIRO – 14 July 2017: Egypt’s Grand Mufti Shawki Allam strongly condemned the detention of the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem (preacher), Muhammad Ahmad Hussein by Israeli forces Friday, according to a statement.

Allam described such acts as “provocative” by the Israeli occupation authorities that only “ignite the conflict in the region and increase violence, which leads to serious consequences.”

In his statement, the Egyptian Mufti called on Israeli occupation authorities to immediately release the Mufti of Jerusalem. He also urged the international community and United Nations bodies “to intervene swiftly to end these provocative and repeated violations and to activate the UN Charter and principles that emphasize peace and human dignity.”

Friday morning, the Israeli forces announced that Friday prayers for Muslims would not be held at Al-Aqsa Mosque and prevented the Grand Mufti from entering the Mosque from multiple entrances. The Grand Mufti, called on all Palestinians to perform Friday prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque following the Israeli prevention decision.
