CAIRO – 15 June 2022: Libya’s Joint Military Commission (JMC) “5 + 5” meetings kicked off in Cairo on Wednesday to build on the achievements made by the commission since the signing of the ceasefire in the Arab country in October 2020.

The multi-day meetings will take place in the presence and sponsorship of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and the UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser for Libya Stephanie Williams.

This comes while Cairo has hosted the third round of the Libyan constitutional track meetings under the auspices of the UNSMIL in the presence of the House of Representatives and High Council of State Committees.

The third round of meetings aims to reach a constitutional path in order to hold presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya.

The talks in Cairo come few weeks after brief clashes took place between rival forces in Tripoli as Libyan parliament-appointed Prime Minister Fathi Bashagha attempted to enter the capital, the seat of his rival Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah.

Cairo’s embrace of the meetings comes within the framework of the Egyptian vision in support of a Libyan-Libyan solution to the Arab country’s crisis away from foreign interference.

Egypt supports the activation of all political paths to reach a solution to the crisis in Libya.

In March, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held a meeting with President of the Libyan Presidential Council Mohamed Al-Menfi, during which they agreed on intensifying coordination between the two countries to facilitate holding the elections in Libya.

In a meeting in Cairo, Sisi affirmed Egypt’s full support to Libya’s national interests, unity, and state institutions.

For his part, Menfi extended appreciation for the Egyptian role in contributing to restoring stability and security in Libya through backing the efforts of Libyan national reconciliation and endeavors to achieve re-unity of the Libyan state institutions.

Menfi also hailed Egypt’s support to the efforts aiming at implementing the relevant international and UN Security Council resolutions regarding the exit of all foreign forces and mercenaries from the country.
