CAIRO – 28 May 2022: The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack that killed dozens of civilians in the eastern Madjoari region of Burkina Faso

“The government and people of Egypt extend their sincere condolences and sympathy to sisterly Burkina Faso and the families of the victims,” the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry also stressed Egypt’s support to and full solidarity with Burkina Faso in the latter’s efforts to counter terrorism.

Some 50 civilians were killed in an attack by armed assailants on the rural commune of Madjoari in eastern Burkina Faso on Wednesday, Colonel Hubert Yameogo, the governor of the East Region, said, according to Reuters.

Wednesday’s attack on the commune, which reportedly has up to 20,000 inhabitants, is one of the bloodiest in the West African country.

The attack brings back to mind Burkina Faso’s deadliest attack over the recent years in June 2021 when assailants killed at least 132 people, including young people, in the village of Solhan, northern the country.

Amid the growing terrorism in the continent, Egypt has repeatedly affirmed keenness to enhance cooperation with African countries to consolidate security and stability in the continent, combat terrorism, and develop energy transition.

In January, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi called for formulating a clear African strategy to eliminate terrorism and to dry up its sources of financing.
