Egypt’s FM: COP27 to see launch of initiatives to enhance fulfillment of climate pledges

CAIRO – 23 May 2022: The 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) that Egypt will host in November will see the launch of a number of initiatives with various parties to enhance fulfillment of climate pledges.

This comes as part of Egypt’s keenness that COP27 provides a chance for all parties to present their efforts and enhance cooperation among each other, Shoukry said during a session held within the framework of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on Monday.

The session comes under the title: The Road to the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 27) to the UNFCCC: Partnerships between the public and private sectors in climate action in the Middle East and North Africa.

During the session, Shoukry, also president-designate of COP27, presented Egypt’s vision for COP27 in November in Sharm El-Sheikh city, which is based on the necessity to focus on the effective and quick implementation of climate pledges announced by various countries.

This should come in a way that preserves the goal of keeping global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius within reach, Shoukry noted.

This vision also includes the need for international climate action be based on the latest scientific facts and data regarding the phenomenon of climate change away from any politicization, the foreign minister said.

He also highlighted the need to work with all parties and partners concerned with climate action, including the private sector, which plays an important role in this regard along with governments.

On the sidelines of the WEF, Shoukry held a meeting with Chief Executive Officer of Boston Consulting Group Christoph Schweizer.

During the meeting, Shoukry discussed with CEO of Boston Consulting Group, a COP27 partner, means of mobilizing climate finance and the role of the private sector on the international climate action.

Shoukry also held talks with a number of high-level officials, including President of the WEF Børge Brende, VP of the EU Commission & Commissioner for Promoting the European Way of Life Marg Schinas as well as Kuwaiti and Qatari foreign ministers.
