Sphinx is all the rage on social media and Egyptians visit him to make sure he's still awake

CAIRO – 15 May 2022: The sphinx has been all the rage on social media in Egypt and beyond, as a pictures of him closed-eyes circulated with comments and jokes about him finally resting after being awake for more than 2,000 years.

Several officials at the Ministry of Antiquities have denied that the Sphinx has closed his eyes, and accounts have varied whether the pictures are photoshopped or taken from angles that obscure his eyes.

An ElWatan News reporter said live from the Sphinx and Giza Pyramids area early on Sunday that there is a turnout of Egyptians who are buying tickets to enter the plateau to make sure the Sphinx is awake.

Memes and comics have also circulated to interpret how the Sphinx dozed off. Perhaps he ate a lot of cookies on the recent Eid al-Fitr? Or is it a curse?

However, the rumor also emphasized the ever-renewing interest in the Sphinx, as hundreds of beautiful pictures, whether real or photoshopped, of the one giant carved limestone rock have also resurfaced.

The sphinx has the head of a human and body of a lion. His face seems to represent Pharaoh Khafre; hence it is thought to have been built in 2558-2531 BC) It measures 73 meters long, 20 meters high, and 19 meters wide.
