Egypt's CAPMAS declares figures on patents, trademarks registered in 2021

CAIRO – 24 April 2022: The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) declared Sunday figures on patents issued in Egypt, in partnership with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and trademarks registered in 2021 on the occasion of World Intellectual Property Day on April 26.

 

The number of patent requests, by both Egyptians and foreigners, slightly increased in 2021 compared to 2020 as it grew to 2,225 up from 2,207 with a rise of 0.8 percent.

 

Nevertheless, the percentage of patent requests by Egyptians declined from 44.3 percent to 39.6 percent. As for the number of patents issued, it is 508 with just 12.4 percent belonging to Egyptians.

 

The sectors in which the patents were mostly issued are chemistry and metallurgy (130), human needs (108), and metal forming and transportation (90). The percentage of patents issued by Egyptians, by each of those sectors, is 11.5 percent, 20.4 percent, and 12.2 percent, respectively.

 

Regarding trademarks, the requests amounted to 36,955 in 2021 with a spike of 67.2 percent compared to 2020. Egyptians constituted the great majority of applicants with almost 77 percent with an increase of 51.8 percent.  

 

The number of trademarks that got actually registered is 10,997 with those founded by Egyptians also composing 70 percent. The largest two other groups are Americans with 9.6 percent, followed by the Chinese with 2.8 percent.
