CAIRO - 13 April 2022:  Minister of Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates' Affairs Nabila Makram has bestowed her ministry's shield on an Egyptian citizen who saved the lives of tens of Arabs including Egyptians during the ongoing Russia-Ukrainian crisis.

A statement issued by the ministry Wednesday said the Egyptian citizen, identified as Islam al Ashiry, managed to save the lives of tens of civilians and took them out of Ukraine despite the risk of war.

Ashiry said in statements during an honoring ceremony that he drove his car in rugged areas in Ukraine for three days to save the lives of civilians including Arabs and foreigners and was able to get them out of Ukraine to neighboring countries.

Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February, but its forces have now fully withdrawn from around the capital Kyiv and northern Ukraine to Belarus and Russia.

Fighting in eastern Ukraine is expected to intensify in the coming weeks as Russia continues to refocus its efforts there, according the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Russian units in Belarus are being redeployed to support those operations, the MoD says.
