Egypt’s Coptic Orthodox Church to celebrate Easter, April 24

CAIRO – 11 April 2022: Egypt’s Coptic Orthodox Church will celebrate Easter on April 24, which comes after the Holy Week at the end of the 55-day period of Lent.

The Orthodox Church started Last February the Great Lent, which lasts for 55 days and ends by Easter, as it held masses and prayers at various churches nationwide.

Pope Tawadros II of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, members of the Holy Synod and top bishops led Monday masses at various churches.

Last May, Head of the Coptic Orthodox Church Pope Tawadros II led Easter Mass at St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Abbasiya district, Cairo, amid limited public audience due to the anti-COVID-19 measures.

The mass was aired on the Egyptian TV and Coptic channels.

The pope said that he will not receive any guests in light of the preventive measures taken to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Number of bishops and priests attended the mass.

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi sent a cable to Pope Tawadros II to greet him on Easter.

In his cable, Sisi hailed the good bonds of fraternity and sincere feelings shared by all Egyptians, Muslims and Christians, saying he prays to Allah to protect Egypt and its great people and bless it with happiness and peace for always, presidential spokesman Bassam Radi said.

The president sent a similar cable of greetings to the Egyptian expats abroad, wishing them a happy Easter.
