CAIRO – 14 February 2022: Lebanon has received 478.5 tons of aid from Egypt, including medicines and food, the largest shipment of Egytian aid to the sisterly country since the Beirut blast in 2020, according to an official statement.

The shipment, which moved from the Damietter port in northern Egypt, included 265 tons of medicines and medical supplies for the treatment from coronavirus and chronic diseases, such as hypertension and diabetes.

The aid also includes 122 tons of food and 100 tons of other aid, the statement said.

Lebanon’s Minister of Interior and Municipalities Bassam Mawlawi told the Egyptian state’s news agency MENA that the aid is another episode of support and solidarity between Egypt and Lebanon to help it get out of the crises it is experiencing.

Mawlawi stressed that this shipment, which is the largest to be delivered through the Egyptian aid bridge, includes medicines directed to the internal security forces to cover their needs.

He added that the Lebanese security services need support currently, noting that the shipment also includes food aid for the Beirut Fire Brigade and the Tripoli Fire Brigade.

Mawlawi highlighted the strong relations between the two countries, stressing that the aid is a message of love from Egypt to Lebanon.

On February 4, 2022, Egyptian Nevin El-Kabbaj, Vice President of the Egyptian Red Crescent Society and Minister of Social Solidarity announced that Egypt would send Lebanon urgent relief aid to face the repercussions it is witnessing recently.

The World Bank said in June 2021 that “Lebanon is enduring a severe and prolonged economic depression,” adding “the economic and financial crisis is likely to rank in the top 10, possibly top 3, most severe crises episodes globally since the mid-nineteenth century.”
