CAIRO - 11 February 2022: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi headed on Friday morning to the French city of Brest, to participate in the “One Ocean Summit,” said Egyptian Presidential Spokesperson Bassam Rady in a statement.

The summit is one of a series held on environment issues, organized by France at an initiative by President Emmanuel Macron, since 2017, Rady added.

This year’s summit will focus on marine issues and all dimensions of the ocean, including marine ecosystem protection, fighting pollution, and responding to the impacts of climate change, in addition to promoting the concept of sustainable blue economy and building sustainable blue finance practices, he continued.

“President’s participation in this important event comes at an invitation by President Macron. The President is among a limited number of heads of state and government invited to the summit to discuss international action on the environment and global environmental degradation, in light of the firm and growing relations between Egypt and France, in addition to Egypt’s vital role regionally and internationally in efforts and initiatives aimed at addressing climate change and marine ecosystem protection,” he said.

These efforts will culminate in Egypt’s hosting of the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 27) to the UNFCCC in Sharm El Sheikh next November, Rady added.

During the “One Ocean Summit”, President El-Sisi intends to focus on the impact of climate change on coastal and marine ecosystems, Rady said.

The President is also expected to elaborate on Egypt’s resolve to shed light during the COP 27 summit on the oceans’ potential to mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to building low-carbon economies, Rady continued.

President Sisi is also to stress the need to boost efforts toward reducing emission from the shipping and maritime sector, which will contribute to the implementation of the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The President’s agenda in France also includes holding summit talks with French President Macron on ways to foster closer bilateral relations, which have seen significant progress over the past years, realizing the two countries’ and their peoples’ common interests.

The two Presidents are also to discuss furthering consultations and coordination on a multitude of regional and international dossiers of mutual concern.

On the sidelines of his visit, President El-Sisi is also expected to meet with a number of heads of state and government to discuss ways to further advance bilateral relations and consult on various regional and international issues.
