CAIRO - 8 January 2022: Egypt has received the third shipment of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine (one million doses) via COVAX in cooperation with GAVI Alliance (formerly the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation), said Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the Health Ministry spokesman.

The third shipment comes in light of the state’s plan and its keenness to provide all types of vaccines to citizens, to enhance societal immunity against the virus and its variants, Abdel-Ghaffar added.

On December 31, 2021, Egypt received a shipment of 347,460 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine via the COVAX Facility.

By the end of 2021, Egypt has administered a total of 55,662,624 million doses of the coronavirus vaccines, according to Acting Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar on Wednesday.

Local media reported that consignments – whose size ranges between 20,000 and 50,000 doses - of anti-COVID-19 drugs will arrive in Egypt by the end of January.

The Health Ministry said, on Friday, that 821 new coronavirus infections were detected, upping the total number of confirmed cases reported in Egypt since the beginning of the outbreak to 391,115.

In a statement, the spokesman said 27 patients have died from the virus over the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 21,909.

As many as 939 patients were discharged from isolation hospitals after receiving necessary medical care, taking the number of recovered cases to 325,364 so far, the spokesman said.
