CAIRO – 4 January 2022: Chairman of the General Authority for Fish Resources Development Salah al-Moselhy stated in a TV interview Monday that Egypt's production of fish in 2021 has hit two million tons.

The official added that 37 percent of that production took place in Upper Egypt, as 57.7 million tons came from Lake Nasser, while 27,000 tons are the output of other lakes lying in that section of the country.

Moselhy also pointed out that - upon the directives of President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi – five fish hatcheries were established in Upper Egypt, which produced 46 million fish last year.

It is noted that Egypt produced 2.2 million tons in 2020 achieving self-sufficiency by 80 percent. The authority's chairman had stated in February that 1.7 million tons were produced by fisheries while the rest came from the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, the Nile River, and lakes.
