CAIRO- 18 December 2021: Egypt is proud of hosting 6 million people (immigrants and refugees) and is keen to provide them a decent life, guarantee their rights and enhance their integration into Egyptian society, said Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Hafez on the International Migrants Day, on December 18.

He added that Egypt’s celebration with the International Day of Migrants showed that Cairo has been keen to keep its doors open to migrants and refugees who left their homes and families for a better life.

In his speech at the Visegrád Group (V4) in Hungary in October, President Sisi said that Egypt has succeeded in preventing any boat of migrants from leaving its shores, but migrants in Egypt have amounted to six million from Africa and other unstable countries.

“From a human rights perspective, Egypt refuses to play that card. We call them guests, not refugees. We don't have refugee camps in Egypt. They live like every other Egyptian; they learn in our schools and they are treated in our hospitals. They were even offered the [Covid] vaccine, although we couldn't provide rates as high as those in European countries.”
