CAIRO – 25 November 2021: The United Nations Security Council warned on Wednesday that those obstructing political transition and elections scheduled for 24 December in Libya may be subject to sanctions.

“The Security Council recalls that individuals or entities who threaten the peace, stability or security of Libya or obstruct or undermine the successful completion of its political transition, including by obstructing or undermining the elections, may be designated for its sanctions,” a presidential statement by the UNSC read.

The the 15-nation council also urged all Libyan stakeholders to respect the results of the vote and cooperate to ensure a peaceful transition of power.

Libya is scheduled to hold both the presidential and parliamentary elections in December, as urged by a roadmap agreed upon by Libyans.

Earlier this week, the Libyan electoral commission concluded the process of receiving applications from those willing to run for president.

The commission announced Wednesday declining the candidacy of 25 individuals for upcoming presidential election, including Seif al-Islam al-Qaddafi, son of Late President Muammar al-Qaddafi.
