CAIRO – 22 October 2021: Egypt’s Ministry of Health said, Friday that the Presidential initiative for manufacturing and achieving self-sufficiency of plasma derivatives is progressing steadily towards achieving its goals.

The ministry added that this initiative considers to be a “a qualitative leap” for Egypt in the health sector, as the project contributes to achieving self-sufficiency in plasma derivatives to provide medicines related to the treatment of many diseases.

The ministry explained that 100 percent of the medicines derived from plasma are ‘life-saving.’

The ministry added that the total number of plasma centers in Egypt that have been equipped reached 7 centers, including the plasma donation center in the 6th of October City, which was inaugurated recently, noting that it is scheduled to inaugurate other 20 centers by the next year.

Last June, The Ministry of Health declared that 20 centers for plasma collection will be established by the end of 2023 as well as a strategic central storage within a plan to achieve self-sufficiency of plasma.

In 2021, six centers have been accomplished in five governorates, which include Giza, Alexandria, and Minya. In 2022, six others will be introduced in Sohag, Daqahliya, Damietta, Menoufeya, Ismailiyah, and Beheira at LE650 million. Eight other governorates will also house plasma collection centers by the end of 2023.

The ministry noted that Egypt is expected to achieve self-sufficiency of plasma within 6-8 years where exporting will begin. Now, Egypt imports its needs of plasma derivatives to treat burn injuries, cancer, haemophilia, and diseases of the liver, kidneys, and immunity.
