CAIRO – 24 August 2021: Deputy Cairo Governor for the Southern Zone Gihane Abdel Moneim told press Tuesday that 383 have been demolished in Beir Om Soltan area located in Basatin Neighborhood to expand the Ring Road.

The plan is removing 390 buildings in that area to raise the number of lanes in each direction from 3-4 to 7-8. The road connects Cairo, Giza, and Qalyoubeya together.

As a result, compensations worth LE4 billion will be disbursed to 1,380 families, 296 shop owners, and 136 workshop owners.

In parallel, 500 families residing in more than 190 buildings in Ezbet Abou Qarn at Old Cairo have been moved to Maan alternative housing project. That is within a plan to implement the Fustat Hill project turning the area into an open museum.

The plan consists of granting residential units to 4,700 families who used to dwell 1,200 flat-buildings in the area.

The deputy governor noted that 56 percent of Cairo's slums used to lie in the Southern part in neighborhoods such as Religions Complex, Cairo Citadel Aqueduct, Seheila, Batn Al Baqara, Establ Antar, Abou Al Soud Kiosks, and Ain Al Haya.
