CAIRO – 5 June 2021: The Health Ministry said 861 new coronavirus cases were detected on Friday, upping the total number of confirmed cases since the outbreak in the country began to 266,350.

In a statement, Spokesman for the Health Ministry Khaled Megahed said 46 patients have died from the virus over the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 15,268.

As many as 781 patients were discharged from isolation hospitals after receiving necessary medical care, taking the number of recovered cases to 195,072 so far, the spokesman said.

For five consecutive days, Egypt has reported a number of new coronavirus cases that is below 1,000 for the first time since April 26.

An official at the scientific committee combating the pandemic said Egypt is now past the peak of the third wave, which has forced the country to close shops, cafes, restaurants and malls earlier for three weeks before it cancelled the decision this week.

The country also is working to vaccinate the largest possible number of citizens per day by allocating new centers for vaccination, encouraging citizens to register to receive the vaccine and reaching homebound citizens at home.

So far, the country has allocated 403 centers to serve as vaccination points, according to Health Minister Hala Zayed on Sunday.

She said the vaccine is provided to about 110,000 citizens per day.
