CAIRO – 1 June 2021: Egyptian Public Prosecution ordered to detain a Brazilian national for four days per investigations after he verbally harassed an Egyptian saleswoman while going live on Instagram.

The prosecution accused the Brazilian national of making sexual innuendo, and thus violating the family principles and values of Egyptian society, the privacy of the woman’s private life, and using a specific social media account to commit such crimes.

Arrested by the Egyptian Police on Sunday, the Brazilian tourist is a physician who is also a popular influencer in his homeland. While the saleswoman was presenting the different types of papyrus in a bazaar, the tourist seized the opportunity she does not understand Portuguese and kept saying sexual expressions.

The woman thought he was talking about the papyrus and kept smiling. However, some of the influencer's followers decided to not be passive, and contacted an Egyptian Facebook page that is concerned with sexual harassment explaining the situation and sending a translation of what he said.

The page posted about what happened, and the post went viral triggering Egyptian police to take action, particularly in light of demands to arrest the tourist. The Brazilian man will be interrogated by the Public Prosecution, which will also listen to the testimony of the victim.
