CAIRO – 20 May 2021: Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al Sisi discussed, Thursday in a phone call with UN Secretary-General Guterres the developments in the Palestinian territories in light of the recent escalation.

President Sisi asserted that Egypt was exerting its utmost efforts to halt any further escalation in the Palestinian territories through intensifying contacts with all parties concerned, reiterating support for all international efforts aimed at ending the current tension, restoring stability and limiting the human and material losses.

During the phone call he received on Thursday from UN Secretary General António Guterres, Sisi warned against the negative impact of the latest developments in the Palestinian territories on regional security along with the worsening humanitarian and living conditions in the Gaza Strip, Presidential Spokesman Bassam Radi said.

The president stressed Egypt's firm stance regarding the necessity of finding a just solution to the Palestinian problem in a way that leads to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in accordance with relevant international legitimacy resolutions, the spokesman noted.

Guterres, for his part, asserted that he was keen on contacting the Egyptian president in light of the pivotal and historic role of Egypt towards the Palestinian issue and its influential relations with all parties concerned, in addition to its objective moves to maintain security and stability in the region.

He also highlighted the UN keenness on supporting current Egyptian efforts to reach a ceasefire between the Palestinians and Israelis to avoid having a more negative impact of the crisis on the regional stability in general.

Guterres also expressed the appreciation of the international community of President Sisi's recent initiative for supporting the reconstruction of Palestinian territories with dlrs 500 million through the specialized Egyptian companies.

The presidential spokesman also said that the conversation covered the importance of intensifying current regional and international efforts along with the UN to urge Israel to halt any further escalation with the Palestinian factions in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip to pave the way for a ceasefire and the restoration of calm to the enclave to be able to kickstart international efforts to revive direct negotiations between the two conflicting sides with the aim of achieving the aspired-for peace in accordance with the international terms of reference.

Earlier, Thursday, Egypt’s President Sisi affirmed to US President Joe Biden, during their first phone call, the need for international efforts to contain the grave escalation in the Palestinian territories.

This comes in light of the Israeli airstrikes over the past days against the Gaza Strip, which have killed 230 Palestinians including children and women and caused hundreds of injuries, according to the Gaza health ministry.

Egypt has carried out diplomatic and political efforts to reach ceasefire in Palestine in cooperation with other partners.

Sisi affirmed Egypt’s unwavering stance highlighting the need for a thorough and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian cause, the Egyptian Presidency said in a statement.

The president noted that this solution should ensure the legitimate and normal rights of the Palestinian people like other peoples worldwide in establishing their independent state in accordance with the international references.
