CAIRO – 4 July 2017: The Cairo Traffic Directorate dedicated on Tuesday hotlines to report the drivers, whether taxi or public transportation drivers, who manipulate the transportation fares. The dedicated hotlines’ numbers are 136 and 01155554444. Once a complaint is received, the traffic police will arrive to the location to further investigate the case and detain involved drivers.

The Director General of Cairo Traffic Directorate, Alaa Metwally, ordered on Tuesday placing signs inside the transport stations to show the transportation fares for rides. This is an attempt to prevent manipulation and violation of transportation fares. Metwally also stressed that public transport drivers will be subject to legal proceedings in the event of proven tampering with the transportation fares. Violators in some governorates will be fined up to LE 1500 ($83).

The increase in transportation fares was announced on June 29, as a result of the Council of Ministers’ decision to increase Fuel and Gas prices. According to the discussion and to respond to the new fuel prices, the fares were increased by 10 percent.

The government took many measures to prevent the manipulation of transportation fares including monitoring campaigns in the transports’ stations and placing signs to show the rides’ fares.
