CAIRO - 14 April 2020: Six nominees are competing in the shortlist of the Arabic Fiction Booker Award 2020. The nominees are Youssef Zeidan (Egypt), Aliaa Mamdouh (Iraq), Saeed Khateby (Algeria), Jabour al-Dowaihi (Lebanon) and Abdul Wahab Esawy (Algeria).

The award was established in 2007 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, where it is based. It is organized by a funding from the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority and sponsored by the British Booker Award Foundation.

The winner is scheduled to be announced on April 14, by broadcasting a video on the award's website. The video will include comments from the award team and the head of the jury, Mohsen al-Musawi, in addition to the winner of the award.

Youssef Zeidan is an Egyptian writer and philosopher. He specializes in manuscript Arab heritage and sciences. Zeidan has several books and scientific papers on Islamic thought, Sufism, and the history of Arab medicine.

Zeidan is the only nominee in this edition, who has previously acclaimed the award, where his novel “Azazeel” was granted the Booker Award in 2009.

His novel "Al Nabati" was also nominated in the award’s long list in 2012. However, the novel did not make it to the short list, and the award was granted to Lebanese writer Rabie Jaber.
