CAIRO - 27 October 2017: The Presidential Committee, tasked to review prisoners eligible for a pardon, will announce a new list of pardoned inmates after holding the upcoming World Youth Forum due in November in Sharm el-Sheikh.
The committee received a number of names for prisoners who will be pardoned per a presidential decree, committee member Tareq al-Khouli told Egypt Today on Friday.
On October 10, sources in the Interior Ministry’s Prison Service Sector stated that as many as 1,000 prison inmates will soon be released on the occasion of the seventh anniversary of the January 25 revolution.
Article 155 of the Egyptian Constitution stipulates that the president may issue a pardon or mitigate a sentence after consulting with the Cabinet.
Marking the feast of Eid al-Adha On September 1, a total of 114 prisoners were released following a presidential pardon.
