CAIRO - 9 October 2018: The Sphinx International Airport will be inaugurated in the coming few weeks, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation on Sunday, Oct. 7.

The new airport was established on an area of 25,500 square meters, 12 kilometers away from the Pyramids of Giza Plateau, a location that aims at boosting tourism.

The new airport will serve the cities of Sheikh Zayed and 6th of October, and is close to Alexandria, Fayoum and Beni Suef governorates. It is also significantly close to the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Giza Pyramids.

The airport, which was constructed by the Armed Forces Engineering Authority in cooperation with the Egyptian Company for the Industrial Investment, accommodates more than 300 passengers per hour.

The pilot operation of the airport started in January.

In June 2018, Civil Aviation Minister Sherif Fathy told reporters that the airport will be enrolled on the list of international airports.
