Liverpool’s suffering comes to an end

CAIRO – 3 June 2019: Mohamed Salah and his teammates put Liverpool on top of Europe after defeating Totteham Hotspur 2-0 at the final thanks to two goals from Salah and Divock Origi.

Liverpool fans celebrated from Madrid to Liverpool as their beloved team touched glory again.

Liverpool’s victory put an end to 14 years of suffering in Europe as the team’s last European title was in 2005 when they defeated AC Milan on penalty-shootouts after the game ended with a 3-3 draw in Istanbul and their historic captain, Steven Gerrard, lifted the club’s fifth Champions League title.

Since 2005, the club failed to compete with European giants like Barcelona, Manchester United and Real Madrid.
In 2006, the club was knocked out by Benfica at the round of 16 after losing 3-0 on aggregate.

The club bounced back the next year as they reached the final, having knocked out Barcelona and Chelsea at the route to the final. However, the team lost 2-1 to Milan who got their revenge from 2005.

The next two editions were hard for Liverpool fans who saw their team losing to Chelsea two years in a row at the semi-finals in 2008 and the quarter finals in 2009.

In 2010, the team was eliminated from the group stage as they finished third at the group and went to play at the Europa League and reached the semi-finals but lost to Atletico Madrid.

Since 2010, the club has suffered during their participation at both competitions until the club appointed Jurgen Klopp as the team manager and he took them to the Europa League Final during his first year but the club lost to the experienced side, Sevilla.

Two years later, Klopp led the team to the Champions League Final but they also lost to Real Madrid who won their third title in a row.

Liverpool fans have suffered a lot since the miracle in 2005 and it was time for football to pay them back.
