CAF president intents to change the competitions’ structures

CAIRO –7 June 2017: Confederation of African Football CAF is studying increasing the teams of African cup of nations to 24 teams instead of 16, and playing the tournament every 4 years like the World Cup instead of every 2 years.

Ahmed Ahmed president of CAF will hold a working session consists of a series of meetings in Morocco on July 18-19 attended by several experts of football in Africa and they will discuss some of the president’s proposals.

Among the agenda of these meetings is to study all the issues of modernization in television broadcasting and marketing and developing the system of continental competitions such as the African Champions League or CAF Confederation cup and other matters.

The Rabat meeting includes more than a very important matter among the proposals what will be discussed, which may delete the regime of Issa Hayatou the ex-president of CAF such as:

1. Holding African Cup of Nations every 4 years instead of 2.
2. The Cup to be played in summer instead of winter.


3. The executive committee shall not be allowed to choose the host country, and it will be voted for by the heads of the National Football Federations.

4. Stopping long-term contracts like Lagardère the French company for the marketing rights of CAF championships.
