CAIRO – 15 June 2018: Egypt’s amazing performance in the group stage’s second match wasn’t enough; the Pharaohs lost 0-1 against Uruguay through late José Giménez header.

The goal was very late and the performance wasn't great from Uruguay but Oscar Tabarez's side has three crucial points, with Jose Gimenez's goal ending a wait since 1970 for La Celeste to win their opening game of a World Cup. Egypt impressed the majority of the game, with Trezeguet and Mohamed El-Shenawy shining, but fell short at the end.

Uruguay now places second in Group A with three points behind the leader and the host nation, Russia, with three points but with five goals in their bank. Egypt is now the third before Saudi Arabia, the fourth.

Egypt was within touching distance from securing what may have been a crucial point, but their performance in the latter stages had dropped, inviting the pressure from Uruguay against players like Gimenez and Cavani.

In the 89th minute, Sanchez delivers a free-kick from the right and Gimenez rises highest in the area to head into the right-hand corner of the net.

A draw was a fair result given the reflection of the match and host nation Russia would be delighted if it stayed like this, as it would put it in a commanding position at the top of Group A.

El-Shenawy has really shone today and he's made a decisive three saves. Two saves from Suarez and a powerful volley from Cavani earned him Man of the Match award after the game.

El-Shenawy is only earning his sixth cap for Egypt tonight and was selected ahead of veteran El-Hadary for the game. He may be less experienced but he's really impressed, making crucial interventions when called upon.
