CAIRO – 2 December 2018: Liverpool’s Estonian defender, Ragnar Klavan, saved his team from a bitter draw when he scored a late goal to secure his team’s 2-1 victory over Burnley on Monday in the Premier League.
Klavan, 32, became the first Estonian player to score a goal in the Premier League. Klavan added his country among the nations whose players celebrated scoring goals in the Premier League.
Estonians never saw an Estonian outfield player in the Premier League until July 2016 when Klavan joined Liverpool from Germany’s FC Augsburg.
The first Estonian to play in the Premier League was Mart Poom, who played as a goalkeeper for Portsmouth, Derby County, Sunderland, Arsenal and Watford between 1994 and 2007.
Klavan is the pride of the Estonian nation, as he has found great success as a player. He won the Estonian Footballer of the Year award five times – in 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 – and he is the fifth highest capped Estonian player of all time.
Klavan’s goal will be a beautiful moment for Liverpool fans, who had a big history, but for Estonians this moment will remain for eternity.
