There is no democracy in Qatar: Xavi

CAIRO – 23 December 2017: Barcelona’s former Captain Xavi Hernandez revealed on Saturday that the Qatari people are not governed by a democracy.

"It's true, there is no democracy in Qatar,” Xavi; who supports the Catalan right to self-determination, told Marca on Saturday.

Xavi experienced living in Qatar since 2015 when he left Barcelona to Join the Qatari club, Al Sadd. Xavi is expected to become a Qatari national team manager in the 2022 World Cup.

Xavi revealed that Qatari people are happy despite lacking political rights in the country. “The people are happy; they are delighted with the royal family. They give them a salary just for living in the country and they take care of their citizens."

Xavi also spoke about the tension between the Catalonian government and Spain saying telling that he favors the “right to decide” and that he doesn’t see where the issue in that is.

The Barcelonan by birth added: “We voted again and there is a clear majority who want the referendum.”

Xavi, 37, spent most of his career as a footballer inside his childhood club, Barcelona. He played for the team from 1998 to 2015.
