CAIRO - 28 November 2017: The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on its official website on Tuesday, the implementation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR). It is used for the first time at the Total African Nations Championship (CHAN), which will be hosted by Morocco between 13 January and 4 February 2018.

CAF said as well in the statement published on its website, that VAR is first used in the quarter-final phase of CHAN, as an experiment before being applied in several other CAF competitions.

The African Confederation confirmed that the decision came during the meeting of the Executive Office, which took place on Monday in Cairo. CAF also approved the names of the African referees who will participate in the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The CHAN will prepare the referees for the World Cup, the most important football tournament in the world.

CAF referees have been the subject to permanent criticism, due to the performance in the continental championships, especially the club championships, which witnessed a large number of repeated errors.
