Cairo -17 November 2017: “Manchester United signed the Argentinean Ángel di María in the summer of 2014 from Real Madrid because it was a good publicity stunt and because the club wanted to sell shirts," says the Brazilian Débora Gomes, a former translator of the English team.

In an interview with 'Esporte Informativo', Gomes unveiled the keys to the signing of Di Maria, from Real Madrid, for $75 million at the beginning of the 2014/15 season.

In actuality, the move was an economic transfer not a football transfer. There were many expectations for selling the Number 7 shirts for the Argentinean winger.

"I've heard this from people in the club, ‘Di María sells shirts, so let's sign him in.’ That's why he was not happy,” says Débora Gomes.

The Manchester United ex-translator said that Di Maria had problems adapting in the club, "First, because he could not communicate with anyone, and second, because he realized that they did not buy him because the club thought that he would bring them titles. He was signed simply because they wanted him to sell shirts."

Débora Gomes explained that following the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson as coach of the first team in 2013, the club prioritized the economic aspect to sports.

"I realized that since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club, the board lost interest in football.
For them it was money, money, money. They make money, that's all, so when they try to buy, say carefully. Who will give us more money? They do not think about the fans, they just think about sales, " he concluded.
