CAIRO – 1 November 2017: Wydad Casablanca is one of the biggest teams in Morocco with huge fan base. They won 19 domestic league titles, 9 Moroccan Throne Cup titles and the CAF Champions League title in 1992.

Wydad’s name has a story to tell, and this story reveals the strong bond between Egyptian and Moroccan cultures.

On May 8, 1937, the founders of the club had a meeting to put the final touches of their new association. They were discussing the name of the club, but one of the founders, Mohamed Mases was missing.

Mases attended the meeting and told them that he was late because he attended Umm Kalthoum’s new movie, “Wydad”, and once he said the name, the attendance heard ululation from the neighbors, which made them optimistic about the name.

After many discussions between the club founders, members and players, they approved the name, and since then, the club started to write its great history.
Wydad Casablanca will host Al-Ahly in the second leg of the CAF Champions League final at Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco on Saturday, and Wydad fans hope to win their second title against a team from the same country as Umm Kalthoum.
